Sometimes I wonder how different things would have Sometimes I wonder how different things would have been if I saw more confident women who looked like me in the media growing up. ⁣
⁣
In magazines. ⁣
As a main character in a movie.⁣
On billboards and advertisements. ⁣
⁣
Anywhere really. ⁣
⁣
But I never did. ⁣
⁣
And so I came to think that bigger bodies like mine weren’t valued. Didn’t belong. Weren’t attractive and didn’t deserve attention.⁣
⁣
I spent years battling those in securities. And to be honest, sometimes I still do. But I’ve also learned how much of a difference representation can make. ⁣
⁣
So, today I take the photos. ⁣
I wear the dresses. ⁣
I put on the red lipstick. ⁣
I choose the bright coloured swimwear. ⁣
And I pose. ⁣
⁣
I try to create the photos of a body that that I wish my younger self had seen growing up. ⁣In the hopes that younger generations don’t feel as insecure as I did.
⁣
Because nobody should grow up feeling like they aren’t pretty enough to be in a picture. ⁣

The Galápagos Islands are a dream destination, bu The Galápagos Islands are a dream destination, but also an expensive one!

I recently spent 2 weeks exploring the islands so here are my tips on how to explore the islands in a more affordable way. So save this post for your visit!

1. Choose a land based tour over a cruise. Not only will it save you a lot of money but, honestly, I felt like it was a more local experience. Also a better option if you get sea sick!

2. If you don’t mind travel planning, skip a tour all together and travel independently. You can island hop on your own. There are public ferries between the islands and it’s easy to find hotels and tours to book yourself.

3. Book in advance. Hotels and flights- take advantages of deals like Black Friday or Boxing Day and book early to save.

4. Explore on your own. Excursions and day trips are great but you dont need them to see wildlife. Go to the beaches. Walk around town. Bring your own mask and snorkel. Trust me, you don’t need to go far to find wildlife.

5. Choose San Cristobal over Santa Cruz. These are the two biggest inhabited islands and both have airports. Santa Cruz is the most developed for tourism and your wallet will feel it. Spend longer or stick to San Cristobal where it’s easier to find cheaper hotels and restaurants. Honestly, I preferred San Cristobal anyway!

6. Bring lots of cash. Ecuador uses the USD and cash is king. There are some ATMs on the islands but they aren’t the most reliable and have high fees. It’s better to bring lots of USD with you.

7. Book tours on the islands with local tour providers, not third parties. Third party pricing to book in advance is so much more expensive than what you will pay on the islands

8. take advantage of happy hour. Lots of restaurants and bars have 2 for 1 deals for a couple of hours every night.

Underwater in the Galapagos 🤿 ⁣ ⁣ If you lo Underwater in the Galapagos 🤿 ⁣
⁣
If you love diving and snorkelling as much as I do then the Galapagos is a must visit. From turtles to sharks to sea lions and plenty of different varieties of fish, there is so much to see. ⁣
⁣
But before you plan your visit, know that some times of the year are better than others. ⁣
⁣
December to June is considered the warm season in the Galapagos. Which means the waters are warmer, calmer, and (hopefully) a bit clearer. I didn’t have the best visibility during my trip as you can see from the video footage, but the wildlife was abundant. Some species you can see year round but others, like the hammerhead sharks, prefer warmer water temperatures so are best seen in the area during this time of year. ⁣
⁣
Must visit spots:⁣
⁣
🤿 Kicker Rock off of San Cristobal for hammerheads & bait ball (scuba and snorkel)⁣
🤿 La Loberia Beach on San Cristobal for snorkelling with sea turtles and sea lions ⁣
🤿 Bartolome Island: a day trip from Santa Cruz. Snorkel here with sea lions and penguins. ⁣
🤿 North Seymour (from Santa Cruz) scuba dive with white tip reef sharks and Galapagos sharks ⁣
🤿 Gordon Rocks (from Santa Cruz) for schooling hammerheads ⁣

Being lonely is one of the biggest fears of solo t Being lonely is one of the biggest fears of solo travel. But I have actually met some of the most amazing people- who I now consider to be some of my closest friends- while travelling. ⁣
⁣
Looking for some tips on making friends while travelling? Here’s what has worked for me over the years. ⁣
⁣
Hostels: hostels are great for meeting people, especially as a younger backpacker. Choose one with a common room and read the reviews ahead of time to find one that suits your vibe. Not all hostels are party hostels if that’s what you are worried about. ⁣
⁣
Walking tours/day trips: free walking tours are one of my favourite things to do when I travel and I often find fellow solo travellers on them. It’s easy to then strike up a conversation and ask if they want to get lunch/dinner/ explore more with you after. Guides day trips and pub crawls are also good for these types of meetings. ⁣
⁣
Social media: we’ve come a long way from our parents being worried we would be lured by strangers online. These days I just meet there. There are tons of travel groups on FB for meet ups and I’ve even met up with Instagram friends before. Of course, be safe and cautious about it and meet somewhere public first. ⁣
⁣
Group trips: if you are worried about going totally alone, join a group trip! I still have space on both Africa trips for this fall and Antarctica 2025 and will be adding new options for next year this summer so keep an eye out! ⁣

The Galapagos Tortoises are endemic to the Galápa The Galapagos Tortoises are endemic to the Galápagos Islands and one of the coolest things to see while visiting the islands. ⁣
⁣
There are 11 different subspecies of Galapagos tortoises across the islands. But, thanks to humans, they need to be bred and raised in captivity in order to survive. ⁣
⁣
When humans came over on ships they brought animals like rats, pigs, and dogs that can crush the eggs and kill the young. So today, eggs are collected and brought to special breeding centres on the islands where the baby turtles can hatch and grow for 5 years before they are released into the wild. Then, they can live freely and will hopefully survive for well over 100 years. ⁣
⁣
The breeding centres are great to visit to see and learn but I loved seeing the Galapagos tortoises in the wild. We had the best luck seeing wild Galapagos turtles on Santa Cruz Island. Part of my group did a land based adventures and saw some up close. Since I was scuba diving I just saw them out the window of the car as we drove up the island. We even turned it into a game and counted the turtles we saw while driving every day. 10/10 recommend for easy entertainment!⁣

On the last day of my ESBT Galapagos group trip, I On the last day of my ESBT Galapagos group trip, I said I wanted to swim with penguins. While it was possible, I sort of said it as a joke. But I had seen and done everything else on my Galapagos wildlife list so I figured why not throw it out there in the universe and see what happens. ⁣
⁣
Late that day I was snorkelling along a beach at Isla Santiago. I had already seen an octopus, sea lion, and swam beside a sea turtle for about 10 minutes when, out of nowhere, a penguin zoomed past me in the water. ⁣
⁣
I literally screamed through my snorkel I was so excited. ⁣
⁣
I assumed it was a quick swim by but I was so excited when this small group of penguins swam around the rocks catching tiny fish. Not a care in the world that I was there watching. ⁣
⁣
The final check off my Galapagos wish list: I got to swim with penguins. ⁣
⁣
…wonder if they will let me do it next year in Antarctica 😉 ⁣

Cheers to: ⁣ ⁣ The women who go alone. ⁣ ⁣ Cheers to: ⁣

The women who go alone. ⁣
⁣
The women who encourage their daughters to explore the world. ⁣
⁣
The women eager to experience cultures and customs different from their own. ⁣
⁣
The women who share their stories, photos, tips, and advice to help others follow on their footsteps. ⁣
⁣
The women who say ‘yes’ to trying new things, even when it’s scary. ⁣
⁣
The women who balance families and/or careers with their love of travel. ⁣
⁣
To the women who go, see, and do. ⁣
⁣
Cheers to you. ⁣
⁣
For pushing boundaries. ⁣
⁣
For changing the travel industry and views of women and what we want in the travel sphere. ⁣
⁣
For opening up more opportunities for future female travellers and making things easier, safer, and more accessible. ⁣
⁣
Like everything else, the travel industry- whether you work in it or just play in it-can be tough on women. But things are changing for the better. ⁣
⁣
Let’s keep that momentum going. ⁣
